The Benifits of CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance made in the body and provided by some foods. Our survival depends on the ability of the cells in our bodies to continually convert the food we eat into usable energy, also known as ATP-energy. CoQ10 is an essential nutrient that enables this to happen.

If our cells do not produce enough ATP-energy due to a lack of CoQ10, the cells cannot function as they should. This lack of function accelerates the aging process, may lead to congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, reduced brain function or a weakening of the immune system. CoQ10 deficiency also contributes to other common anti-aging problems.

Our bodies production of CoQ10 is a 17-step process. This process requires vitamins, minerals and enzymes. After the age of 20, some of the enzymes required in this process become less abundant. The body’s ability to produce CoQ10 begins to reduce at the age of twenty. By the age of forty, reduced CoQ10 production becomes significant.

On average, food provides 5-10 mg of CoQ10 per day. This is enough when our bodies are young and producing most of the CoQ10 that we need. By the age of forty to fifty and to ward off chronic diseases much more is required. Studies show that 30 mg of CoQ10 per day by the age of forty to fifty is very beneficial and 60 mg per day is recommended after the age of sixty. Dosages from 150-300mg per day are required to have positive impacts on congestive heart failure, Parkinson’s disease, high blood pressure, failing memory or irregular heart beats.

If your intention is longevity, slowing the aging process, reducing degenerative diseases and to increasing vitality, CoQ10 can play a major role. It is a safe, effective and natural means to counter the body’s aging clock. Supplementing CoQ10 allows you to replace what the body can no longer provide. This allows every cell in your body, the opportunity to function optimally.

CoQ10 is also a potent anti-oxidant which prevents free radical damage to the “energy factory” of the cells. For an anti-aging treatment to be effective, it is imperative for the cells to function to the best of their ability. Cells with optimum function will slow the aging process and prevent degenerative diseases.

The immune enhancing properties of CoQ10 may help to prevent cancer and infections. Certain medications decrease our cells production of CoQ10, so take CoQ10 at different times than you take your mediations. Keep in mind that CoQ10 is a supplement and a prescription is not required. CoQ10 is available at health food stores and by natural health care providers. As with all supplements, quality varies greatly and you get what you pay for. CoQ10 is on the expensive side so be prepared to spend a little extra.
